We're having a lot of these windmills cropping up in Canada too. I'm a biologist and am concerned they are having a negative impact by killing bats and birds. Progress!

Yes, the birds/bats debate is oft-cited as an issue for wind energy, but in one memorable conversation during my walk for Tilting, I spoke to a Forestry Commission ranger at a red kite feeding station very close to a wind farm and he said that on still, cold days in winter, the birds actually sit on the blades! And that, with over 200 birds feeding at their site in winter, numbers closely monitored, they had never had a problem with the turbines and birds. But I guess where they have been inappropriately sited on migratory routes is certainly a big problem.
It's a difficult balance, but climate change will wreak its own havoc on our biodiversity in different ways...
